“So I shouldn’t be surprised that the Mother’s Day Parade shooting has largely been forgotten. On Sunday, shots were fired into a crowd during a parade in the New Orleans 7th ward. Police said they saw three suspects running from the scene.

This is the largest mass shooting in the United States where the shooters were still at large after the crime was committed. Think about that for a minute. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Fort Hill to Aurora, all the shooters were either killed or apprehended on site. But the person or people responsible for shooting 19 Americans are still free.”

So, an edited version of a textmessage log between me and nextian:

me: I think another big GoT TV vs. books difference is that for predictable but understandable business reasons the show promotes an Everyone is Gray Pick Your Team Who Will Win??? relativism whereas the books are actually very sharply colored by authorial morality with very sharply virtuous and nasty decisions and it is never unclear who are you Meant to Root For, though it changes. The books have a lot more of the feel of Epic Tragedy Melodrama with Tragic Flaws: readers think they’re morally relativistic because they’re violent but they are really not—however, more of an evenhanded ensemble is suited to TV than a clear set of authorial messages.

Which I agree with—it’s quite possible the book Lannisters would have made tedious and painful TV. You don’t have to spend a ton of serialized time with them in the same way reading. TV has to give you a lot of character options to invest in—books have to pick a team, and these are no exception. This means GoT viewers express a degree of uncertainty/belief that a team will “win” which puzzles me until I realize the show doesn’t underline the same heavyhanded anti-LotR All Power Corrupts message.

Fandom meta often reductively focuses on character while ignoring the gamechanging narrative things that color what a story is even about. ASoIaF is a giant convoluted morality play, not a gritty character drama.

nextian: That’s just what I was thinking — on the one hand, moral complexity isn’t a bad thing and the show retains the point that competence, not virtue, is what survives, but it completely blunts the point that maybe the good are doomed but let’s not pretend they’re not good because of it.

Which — I’m very sympathetic to “wanting to help will not save you and it can make things worse” but it’s still a loss. Like it’s be able to refer to my boss as Ned Stark and have everyone know exactly what I mean but hey ho kings still have to go.

me: Yeah, the books make it in no way unclear that you are meant to respect Brienne and pity Jaime, and that Jon Snow’s whole not very exciting journey is about becoming more altruistic and not loyal to kingship. They are an interesting and problematic anti aristocracy narrative about how being nice may be dangerous but you should do it anyway.

Which is I guess what pains me to see them take more flak than shiny happy fascism, but that’s more of a personal preference, I think it’s possible to personally dislike GRRM’s execution of an anti-monarchical story for many true reasons* but recognize that is the intent.

*reasons include needless sexualization of women, homophobic characterization of queer people while attempting to include them (Cersei definitely, arguably Renly in some ways), total exotic foreigner racism/mighty whiteyness (Dany’s whole storyline), and all the other barrel of failmonkeys along this super-long narrative journey into moral implications of power & violence, like wow how do you even cover it in a footnote

I agree with you 100% there should be tests for people to see if they should be able to/have the mental capacity to own a gun. But they have the 2nd? amendment that says they have the right to own one. But those are 100s of years old rules :/

If owning a gun is your first choice when it comes to self defense instead of actually learning how to defend yourself with your body I have no respect for you. Hell, here’s even illegal to port knives of any kind. The right to own one? Are you kiddin’ me crab? That retrograde way of thinking pisses me off so much, if this world is so damn fucked up it’s because all those old laws and amendment JUST DON’T WORK.
